Why fan art? 

Everyone has stories that are important to them. Art is how I express my love of stories that have become important to me.

One day I woke up and realized I hadn’t drawn anything in over ten years (margin doodles notwithstanding). What had been a childhood passion fell by the wayside as adult responsibilities took over. I knew I wanted to reclaim this part of my creative life, but there was never time today; maybe tomorrow.

I saw “Our Flag Means Death” and wanted to learn everything about it. What I found was a fan community sharing an overwhelming outpouring of amazing art on every social media platform imaginable, and I thought “wow,” and I thought “beautiful,” and then I thought, “me too.”

So I owe gratitude to the creative team behind Our Flag Means Death, and to every single fan artist whose work I saw, for inspiring me to make art again.

This page won’t always be only pirates (I do like other things), but the name Black Cravat will stay. IYKYK.

About the Artwork

All of the art you see on this page was created with graphite and charcoal on pressed watercolor paper. I do not use any white pencils. Art was scanned with the goal of matching the original, physical work as closely as possible.
